"We are all Barbies" refers to the fact that since the doll was created, in 1959, she represented every aspect of a human being, There were controversies and lawsuits, often involving parodies of the doll and her lifestyle (per Wikipedia), there were memes and quotes about Barbie; however, she represents us, all the people, from all cultures, with our flaws and qualities.
There is a Barbie in us, either we are from the US or from Asia or from another place on Earth, either we are nice to each other or jealous of each other. I personally never owned a Barbie and never heard of Barbie until I immigrated to the US. The reason behind this is that I grew up in a communist country and, for an anarchist regime, Barbie represented capitalism, freedom and something lavish that the oppressed people were not even allowed to dream of during those harsh times.
Being surrounded just by dull Russian dolls, all named with Russian names, I was not interested in liking the dolls. It took me a while to understand the Barbie frenzie that was going on all around the Western world....but now, although I am not a fan of pink, I totally embrace the concept and what it means.
