Black, White, or Gray! explores the notion of relativity, not just as a philosophical concept but as a lived human experience. Is there such a thing as absolute truth in our universe? Or is everything, ultimately, relative? I believe that nothing in life is ever purely Black or purely White. These extremes serve only as symbolic boundaries of a much broader spectrum. The truth—our individual and collective truths—often resides in the in-between spaces, in the nuanced realm of Gray. In this collection, I present paintings rendered in varying tones of Gray, beginning with luminous White and gradually descending into dense, impenetrable Black. The visual language of this work employs color, or the deliberate absence of it, to speak of identity, soul, and the inherent ambiguity of existence. I find Black particularly profound and mysterious. It reflects nothing back to the viewer, yet absorbs everything around it—light, shadow, meaning. Through these carefully orchestrated tonal extremes, I aim to portray not mere surface appearances, but the deeper essence of figures—human, animal, and abstract forms that speak to universal experiences. Through the silent mouths and contemplative gazes of these figures, I offer a simple yet profound message: no one is purely good or purely evil. Most of us inhabit the Gray, navigating the complex moral landscape between extremes. Perhaps the only true White represents absolute truth and divine perfection, while the only absolute Black embodies pure evil and destruction. Yet very few beings inhabit either realm completely. Therefore, no one is inherently superior to another based on moral positioning alone. To live authentically is to accept our moral complexity, to respect our fundamental differences, and to discover commonality within apparent contrast. Ultimately, light only gains meaning in relation to darkness, just as truth implies the inevitable presence of error and uncertainty. It is this dynamic collision between Black and White—this eternal dance of opposites—that gives birth to the magnificent complexity of life. We exist not in moral purity, but in the layered, textured beauty of the Gray, where wisdom and growth flourish in the spaces between certainties. |
