Weaving together love and creativity, this exhibit presents a captivating dialogue between black and white and color photography by James Gunderson and Miriam Schulman. As both husband and wife and creative collaborators, they explore the world of photography together, each bringing their unique perspective to a remarkable range of subjects that span the intimate and the infinite, the forgotten and the fantastical.
Their partnership extends far beyond the personal realm, creating a dynamic artistic synergy where two distinct visions complement and enhance each other. While their individual styles and subjects may differ dramatically, their shared passion for capturing the world through their lenses creates a cohesive narrative that celebrates both the diversity of photographic expression and the power of creative partnership.
Photographer Miriam Schulman's work attempts to capture the extraordinary beauty and wonder of the natural world, alongside the bizarre absurdity of the human one. She documents both the monumental and the minute, frequently focusing her lens on the unusual, often hidden world of insects and spiders. Her photographs reveal the intricate architectures of nature that most people overlook—the delicate geometry of a spider's web beaded with morning dew, the alien-like features of a praying mantis, or the unexpected patterns found in everyday urban environments.
Miriam honed her ability to see through diverse creative disciplines, working as a film editor where she learned to craft narrative through visual sequences, as a jewelry designer where she developed an eye for intricate detail and craftsmanship, and as a macro-photographer where she mastered the technical precision required to reveal worlds invisible to the naked eye. This multifaceted background infuses her photography with both technical excellence and storytelling depth, whether she's documenting the microscopic universe of insects or capturing the surreal moments of human behavior that make us question our own assumptions about normalcy.
James considers himself a native-born Californian, even though he was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in Austin and immigrated to California in the early 1990s, where, like many dreamers, he thought he could become an actor. Although that particular dream never materialized—though he does proudly maintain his Screen Actors Guild card as a badge of that adventurous chapter—he successfully carved out a career in the entertainment industry as a software developer, contributing his technical expertise to companies such as Harris Broadcasting, Technicolor, and Deluxe.
Throughout his journey in the digital realm of Hollywood, James quietly developed his photographic eye, capturing moments and places that spoke to him. His current creative passions center on photography, specifically gravitating toward abandoned ghost towns where history whispers through broken windows and weathered facades, the iconic stretches of Route 66 that embody America's restless spirit of adventure, and, perhaps most unexpectedly, the mesmerizing world of hot tub bubbles—finding profound beauty in the ephemeral, crystalline spheres that dance on water's surface.
Together, James and Miriam invite you into their shared world of discovery, where love and art intertwine to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Enjoy this journey through their lenses, and have a wonderful day exploring the extraordinary in the ordinary.
