The Sasse: Where love stories develop
between art and viewer

"The best teachers are those who show you where to look but don't tell you what to see." - Alexandra K. Trenfor

This spirit of guided discovery animates Art Professors, an exhibition bringing together 22 artists who teach in the art and photography programs of 19 colleges and universities in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. This is a particular cross-section of the art world, a specific gathering of makers: those who spend their days moving between the classroom, the studio, and the darkroom, nurturing hands-on fine arts and vocational practice while also pursuing their own creative work.

The institutions represented range from dedicated art schools to research universities to comprehensive colleges to community colleges. Within each, the programs vary - a fine arts studio class, a vocational photography course, a theory seminar. Each context comes with its own demands, its own rhythms and constraints. The full-time Professor has a different day than the Adjunct Professor. But what these artists share is the lived reality of a dual calling - the work of fostering young artists and craftspeople while also, in the hours snatched between classes and critiques, doing the patient labor of their own making.

In bringing together nearly two dozen of these teaching artists, Art Professors offers a glimpse into that shared condition, that common pursuit. But it's a glimpse of uncommon richness and variety. The works on view span a wide range of mediums and practices - from painting to sculpture to photography, to other media. From the studio to the gallery to the city street. Each piece embodies a particular way of seeing and making, a distinct creative language. Yet in their juxtaposition, in the resonances and contrasts between them, they speak to something shared: the diligence and discipline of the artist's life, the daily act of showing up to the work.

Most of all, the exhibition invites us to encounter these artists as makers in their own right, these teachers as practitioners. It's a chance to see their work not through the lens of their instruction, but on its own terms. A chance to meet the person behind the podium, the voice guiding the critique. And in doing so, perhaps, to recognize something of the creative life in its many guises, the common threads that run through the artist's way, whatever forms it takes.

Art Professors carries forward the spirit of The Sasse, a space committed to enabling encounters, to sparking those "love stories between art and viewer." The show opens a door into a particular community of makers, offering us a generous view of their shared pursuit.
